Whether you’re new to climbing or looking to progress toward multi-pitch and outdoor independence, this course provides a structured and hands-on approach guided by experienced instructors.

Course Structure

Lesson 1 — Presentations, gear check, Standards in climbing

  • Presentation of the course
  • Gear check of participants
  • Understanding the safety chain in climbing
  • Knot tying and harness setup
  • Communication and safety protocols

Day 1 – Fundamentals & Movement

We begin with an introduction to rock climbing, focusing on:

  • Basic climbing movement and footwork
  • Introduction to belaying (top rope)

You’ll spend the day building confidence on the rock while learning efficient movement and balance.

Lesson 2 — Safety Chain, Hazards

  • Dynamic of climbing, falls, forces in the safety chain
  • Objective hazards: rock fall, temperature effects, terrain traps
  • Safe approach and descent strategies

Day 2 – Technique & Rope Systems

On day two, we deepen your understanding of climbing systems:

  • Advanced footwork and body positioning
  • Belaying techniques (top rope and intro to lead belay)
  • Rope management and communication

This day focuses on making you more efficient and safe as a climber and belayer.

Lesson 3 — Meteorology

  • Reading weather forecasts
  • Recognizing dangerous weather patterns (storms, wind, temperature swings)

Day 3 – Safety in Climbing & Anchors

Now it’s time to step into leading:

  • Anchor thread
  • Clipping, route reading, and fall awareness
  • Anchor building (bolted and natural anchors)
  • Cleaning routes and managing transitions
  • Mock leading

You’ll begin leading under supervision and gain confidence managing real climbing scenarios.

Lesson 4 — Planning a Day & a Route

  • How to select an objective based on weather, conditions, and ability
  • Time management and turnaround times
  • Gear preparation and rack selection
  • Decision-making and risk evaluation
  • Emergency planning

Day 4 – Lead climbing and Independence

The final day brings everything together:

  • Building anchors and managing a team
  • Decision-making
  • Efficiency, safety, and problem-solving
  • Mock leading

By the end of the course, you’ll have the tools to climb outdoors with greater independence and confidence.

The Experience

Climbing in Iceland offers a truly unique environment, with dramatic volcanic rock, sea cliffs, and untouched nature. Over four days, you’ll not only learn essential climbing skills but also immerse yourself in one of the world’s most inspiring outdoor classrooms.

If conditions are not good, the outdoor days are at Miðgardur

The location of the outdoor days will be decided at the lesson or few days before, according to the weather and ice conditions.

Transfer for the outdoor days is not included; food and drinks are not included

Gear can be rented (helmet and harness) for the course.

Participants have to come prepared to stay out for hours

Lessons are in a warm and cosy room at Klifurhusið in Ármuli 21 in Reykjavik.
